World Slasher Cup will ramble on starting Monday

More than 300 entries will come head-to-head in the 2018 World Slasher Cup Invitational 9-Cock Derby beginning on Monday, Jan. 29, at the historic and air-conditioned Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Known as the Olympics of cockfighting, the World Slasher Cup began in the early ‘60s and became an international phenomenon starting in 1988. Hosted by Pintakasi of Champions, the 10-day super that runs until Feb. 7 has attracted local and international champions.

In a classy press gathering in Novotel Manila-Araneta Center’s Versailles Tent, local participants and returning WSC champs will be introduced to the public, including last year’s winners Frank Berin, Anthony Lim, and the Escolin Brothers. The event, which is highlighted by the traditional Pitting of the Birds, will also be graced by the 2017 Binibining Pilipinas Queens.

Meanwhile, foreign contenders include the durable Ray Alexander of Alabama, a consistent WSC participant; Lonnie Harper of Mississippi, who is famous for his Mule Train greys; and Mike Formosa of California. Other foreign participants are from the US (Georgia, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, as well as Guam and Hawaii); Indonesia, Vietnam; Malaysia; and Australia.

One of WSC’s main backers is the Filipino-owned company Excellence Poultry & Livestock Specialists, along with PitGames Media Inc. of Manny Berbano as media partner.

Cockfight aficionados are advised to come early for the grand opening on Monday due to the big number of fights (more than 100 a day for the 3-day Eliminations).

Audiences who want to witness the Derby may buy Patron and Box tickets from the Ticketnet Box Office at the Araneta Coliseum Circle, beside Yellow Gate; or call 911-5555 for more information.

Sabong fans may also follow the WSC official website at www.slashercup.ph or the official Facebook page at @WorldSlasherCupOfficial for updates, information, videos and other content.
